Hamilton: An American Musical – The Highlights

One of the biggest musical hits of the last few years has been Lin Manuel Miranda‘s Hamilton. Here are just a few of my favourites from this innovative show.

       Alexander Hamilton

This track was always going to be on my list. It is probably one of the more obvious choices on the album, but I absolutely love this song. It sets up character and conflict, and teases at what there is to come. This song covers two decades of Hamilton’s life and creates a impressive opening for the show.

The Schuyler Sisters

In my opinion, this track is one of the catchiest in the entire show. It introduces us to Angelica, Eliza, and Peggy Schuyler and combines the styles of 70s and 80s rap. Whether this type of music is your thing or not, lyrics like “work, work” and “how lucky we are to be alive right now” will get stuck in your head for hours after each listen.

Burn

One of the more classic ‘musical theatre’ songs in the show. Phillipa Soo gives a brilliantly nuanced performance and we get to see the extent of her talent. The mixture of emotions portrayed throughout the song makes it, in my opinion, one of the best in the show.

It’s Quiet Uptown

‘It’s Quiet Uptown’ is definitely the tear-jerker of the show. Personally, I haven’t been lucky enough to see Hamilton yet. However, I am pretty confident that if I had been at a performance, there wouldn’t be a dry eye in the house at this point.

Satisfied

‘Satisfied’ is just a brilliant piece all round. It has notoriously difficult tongue twisting lyrics. The song’s tempo changes several times to reflect Angelica’s feelings. Renee Elise Goldberry’s speedy delivery of the lyrics is on another level in this song.
